Mount Rushmore, So. Dakota June 26-28, 2006

We stayed at Mount Rushmore Koa at Palmer Gulch. They have 500 RV and tent sites, two heated pools and a waterslide. Just 5 miles from Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and 10 miles from Crazy Horse Monument. The Black Hills of South Dakota have always held a special meaning. The American Indians have considered these hills a sacred place to people from many cultures and countries. The four president's heads are carved in an ever lasting sheer granite cliff in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. The four president's are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The president's heads were carved by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, each head measures 60 feet from the top to the chin. He directed the carving from 1927-1941. It was dedicated July 4, 1991. We went to a lighting show at Mt. Rushmore. It was a slide show about the presidents history and then they put the lights on the heads. The next day we went to Crazy Horse Memorial. Korczak Ziolkowski was the scupltor. The memorial is not completed yet. The Crazy Horse's head was revealed in 1998.
